Applying Foundation

Best Makeup foundation Tips - How to apply foundation?

Choosing the right foundation is the first step to a successful makeup result. Perfect matching foundation can only be assessed by correct estimation of skin type, natural color and skin tone.

  • Liquid Foundations - Liquid foundation is best for 'natural look' makeup and is most commonly used by women for daily purposes. It is easy to apply and is not easily visible. It comes in oil-based formulas for people with dry to normal skin and water-based formulas for people with oily skin. It is very important to match the foundation to your natural face complexion and the tone of your color. Most of the foundations come in pink-based, orange-based and yellow-based formulas. Yellow base is said to fit most of the women and is thus, very popular.
  • Cream Foundations - Cream foundations are not a favourable choice. The creamy foundation goes on smooth but dries quickly...making blending a bit difficult. They are known for their heavier coverage and more intense moisturizing properties, making them ideal for normal, dry skin.
  • Powder Foundations - Powder foundations or cream to powder foundations are the best options for you, which combines the action of foundation and powder in one. These foundations can be applied as cream or powder and give a quick dry fresh-face look. They are especially suited to people with oily skin or areas where humidity is quite high.
  • Mousse Foundations - These are quite moisturizing and ideal for dry skin. The best way is to dab a little of the product onto the back of your hand, then dot on to your skin with a sponge.
  • Compact Foundations - These are all in one formulation which already contain powder. They come in a compact, usually with their own sponge for application.
  • Stick Foundations - They have a heavy texture and so are best confined for use on badly blemished or scarred skin.

HOW TO BUY FOUNDATION

  • Before buying a foundation, test the color on the inside of your wrist. The skin here is unblemished and will give you an idea on how the color will look on your face.
  • Don't make up your mind instantly. It takes about a minute for colour to dry and interact with the chemicals in your skin. The red pigments develop first so it will appear the pinkest at the beginning.
  • Then go to the nearest source of natural light. If you have chosen the right colour, it will disappear into the skin.

HOW TO APPLY FOUNDATION

  • A simple formula to remember for visually contouring the face with foundation is that light shades highlight and darker shades minimize.
  • Don't test foundation and concealer color on your hand. Match it, instead, on your face and neck.
  • Always use a foundation with a sunscreen of at least 15 to prevent future sun damage.
  • After you apply foundation go near a window to make sure it looks natural. Natural light is the ultimate test.
  • When applying foundation, stop about an inch above the jaw line then blend downward past the jaw to avoid a line of demarcation.
  • To minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, avoid heavy foundation and opt for a lightweight foundation or one of the powders with micronized talc.
  • To give ruddy skin a smooth and flawless appearance, use a green foundation under your regular foundation.
  • Choose a foundation shade between the lightest and darkest areas to even out the complexion.
  • While applying liquid foundation, it is better to put small points of foundation at different parts of your face such as forehead, nose tip, chin and cheek bones and then blend a little at a time on the face to give a more finished look.
  • You can use powder foundation just like the normal compact powder.
