What is Folliculitis?
Folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicle. It is a common disorder of the skin, and it can occur at any age. Typically it appears as an eruption of skin that surrounds a hair or hair pore. Many red bumps or pus bumps are seen. Frequently a hair is seen coming out of the center of an individual bump. Any part of the skin can be involved except for the palms and soles.
Causes of Folliculitis
- Staphylococcus aureus are the most common bacteria that cause folliculitis. It is not known why these bacteria infect the hair follicles.
- Contact with oils, tar and grease can make one more susceptible to folliculitis.
- Tight or occlusive clothing such as polyester can contribute to the development of folliculitis.
- Heat and sweating are also factors that can contribute to folliculitis.
- Some people are born with a tendency to development folliculitis. If you are one of these people you may have to continue treatment to prevent recurrences.
Treatment of Folliculitis
Different Types of Treatment For Folliculitis are available, some are :
- liquid form of Lever 2000 soap (a mild antibacterial soap)
- Wearing loose cotton clothing.
Home care for Folliculitis
- If the area of involvement is in a damp or sweaty area such as under the arms or between the thighs keep the area dry as possible. You may want to blow dry 2-3 times a day.
- Use medicated powder in the area on a daily basis. This helps keep the area dry and reduces frictional pressures.
Tips for Preventing Folliculitis :
Although it's not always possible to prevent folliculitis, these measures may help keep you infection-free:
- Avoid constricting clothing. Tight clothes - especially jeans and athletic wear - may be stylish, but make sure they don't chafe your skin.
- Shave with care. Use an electric razor or a new blade every time you shave. Be especially careful to keep the shaved area clean and to avoid cuts and nicks. If you're a woman who gets frequent infections, you may want to consider depilatories or other methods of hair removal.
- Maintain hot tubs. If you own a hot tub, clean it regularly and add chlorine when recommended. Use commercial tubs only if you're sure they're well maintained.
