Toothache

Toothache - Info on Toothache Symptom, Causes & Treatment

What is Toothache?

The most common cause of toothache, or pain in the region of the jaws and face, is pulpitis - inflammation of the pulp of the tooth. The short, sharp pains usually occur in response to hot, cold or sweet stimuli.

If left untreated, the pulp dies and becomes infected, leading to the formation of a dental abscess. The pain from a dental abscess tends to be in response to pressure on the tooth, and is throbbing and continuous

Causes of Toothache

Cavities get their start from plaque that sticks to the surface of a tooth and provides food for bacteria. The bacteria and certain acids break through the enamel surface of the tooth, forming a hole that fills with decayed matter. The decay then spreads to the inside of the tooth. Other causes of toothache are mouth injury, a cracked tooth, a head cold, or sinus or dental infection. You may also have tooth pain after having dental work.

Symptoms of Toothache

The pain can be dull, sharp, aching, burning, or throbbing. It may come and go, and may affect the whole mouth or only one part. Hot or cold foods and biting and chewing may increase the pain. Other possible symptoms include fever and swollen gums.

Treatment of Toothache

Some ways try out at home to control the pain.

  • Gargle with warm water or warm water mixed with salt, each time after food or after brushing every night.
  • Apply a little alcohol or clove oil or nutmeg oil to the effected tooth or area.
  • When there is pain, take a piece of ice and press it against the skin between your thumb and forefinger.
  • If you have severe pain, keep a piece of ice inside the mouth between the tooth and the cheeks for 15 minutes. Repeat four times a day.
  • Have lots of milk and leafy vegetables and calcium. Avoid  sweet, sour and cold things which causes tooth decay.
  • When you have pain , never apply heat on your cheeks. If you are having an infection of the tooth applying heat will aggravate it.

Some Home Remedies for Treating Toothache

  • Salt Combine two tablespoons of salt with one cup of boiling water; take a mouthful of water as hot as possible and slosh it around your mouth near the tooth; repeat as necessary.
  • Tea Suck on a teabag. Place it as close to the aching tooth as possible.
  • Chewing of fresh bark of Babool tree helps strengthen loose teeth and arrest any bleeding from the gums.
  • Toothache is often alleviated by placing a small piece of onion on the affected tooth.
  • A pinch of pepper powder (Kali Mirch) mixed with clove oil can be put in the caries to alleviate toothache.
  • Try to compress the affected area with ice.
  • The best way to prevent tooth decay is to brush at least twice a day, preferably after every meal.
