Vitiligo

Vitiligo - Causes, Symptom And Treatment of Vitiligo

What is Vitiligo ?

Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder in which special skin cells (melanocytes) that produce the pigment melanin in the skin as well as the tissues (mucous membranes) that line the inside of the mouth, nose, and genital and rectal areas, and the retina of the eyes are destroyed. As a result, white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. The hair that grows in areas affected by vitiligo may also turn white.

Causes of Vitiligo

  • Patients with vitiligo are sensitive to free radicals and need aggressive vitamin therapy, see below.
  • Vitiligo sometimes runs in families, meaning that a genetic factor may be involved.
  • Vitiligo sometimes occurs at the site of an old injury.

Symptoms of Vitiligo

Vitiligo is usually first noticed as white patches (depigmentation) on their skin. These patches are more common in sun-exposed areas, including the hands, feet, arms, face, and lips. Other common areas are the armpits and groin, and around the mouth, eyes, nostrils, navel, and genitals.

Vitiligo generally appears in one of three patterns. In one pattern (focal pattern), the depigmentation is limited to one or only a few areas. Some people develop depigmented patches on only one side of their bodies (segmental pattern). But for most people who have vitiligo, depigmentation occurs on different parts of the body (generalized pattern). In addition to white patches on the skin, people with vitiligo may have premature graying of the scalp hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, and beard. People with dark skin may notice a loss of color inside their mouths.

Home remedies for Vitiligo

Home remedies that are popular include sunscreens, cosmetics, and support groups or counseling. Sunscreen is used to provide protection from ultraviolet light that may increase the white patches. Cosmetics such as stains, makeup or self-tanning lotions will help to cover up the white spots and is great for those that only have small patches. Since, Vitiligo also affects your appearance it can cause emotional problems. There are several support groups that can help you with all of the emotional aspects of this disease.
