Xanthomas

Xanthomas - Info on Xanthomas Symptom, Causes & Treatment

What is Xanthomas ?

Xanthoma is a peculiar disorder of the skin. Its may begin at any age. xanthomas can affect healthy people, or it can be associated with medical problems. Some cases are genetically inherited. xanthomas are made of cholesterol deposits. Sometimes xanthomas can occur suddenly on other areas of the body. These are called eruptive xanthomas and are a sign that blood fat levels are too high.

Causes of Xanthomas

Xanthomas are caused by tiny accumulations of fat droplets located in a specific type of skin white blood cell.  This type of eruption has been associated with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes and disorders of the blood fats.  I will need to run special tests to make sure there is no dangerous underlying medical condition.

Treatment of Xanthomas

Treatment of xanthomas with an underlying lipid disorder is to identify and treat the lipid disorder. In many cases, treating the underlying disorder will reduce or resolve the xanthomas. In addition, treating hyperlipidaemia will reduce the risk of heart disease, and treating hypertriglyceridaemia will prevent pancreatitis. Dietary and lifestyle modifications with or without medication are used to treat lipid disorders.

Surgery or locally destructive modalities can be used to remove xanthomas that do not resolve spontaneously or with treatment of the underlying cause. Xanthoma disseminatum affecting vital organ functions may be treated by chemotherapy drugs or radiotherapy.
